The future of cameras

The Death of the Webcam

Why cameras no longer have to show reality—and what that change means for people creating live.

A creator performing through a transformed live camera

Live character transformation is the process of using a person’s live camera performance to drive another visual character in real time. Unlike a static avatar or prerecorded generated video, the output changes continuously as the person moves and performs.

Be Anyone is a platform for live character transformation.

A camera no longer has one job

The old webcam was a witness: it showed the room, the clothes and the face placed in front of it. A live transformation camera is closer to an instrument. It receives a real performance, then expresses that performance through a chosen character. Reality remains the input, but it is no longer the only possible output.

Why that changes creative work

Creators can design the visual identity of a live session as deliberately as they choose music, lighting or a thumbnail. A teacher can become a historical guide; a storyteller can appear as a recurring fictional host; a private creator can perform without making an everyday face the product.

What survives the change

The most important parts remain human: timing, voice, humor, judgment and the decision to respond in the moment. The webcam is not dying because performance matters less. It is changing because performance can now travel through more than one visual identity.
